The Char Dham Yatra: Facts

The Chota Char Dham Yatra encompasses the holy shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Saint Sri Adi Shankaracharya, in the 8th century, established these. The Deo Bhumi’s four shrines are significant in Hindu Mythology, and the journey leads to salvation or Moksha. Moksha is nothing but to get rid of or wash away all sins. There is a belief that to bring good fortune, one has to undertake it from the West to the East, following the sequence of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. However, one can commence the journey from any of these holy sites.

After the 1962 Indo-China War, better connectivity and infrastructure at border areas were considered. Roads were built to the nearest points of the holy abodes. Now, people from every background, be it economic or social, and from any country can initiate a tour of Char Dham, situated in the lapse of the Himalayas, Uttarakhand. The Adobe of Gods yatra starts between April and lasts until November, as harsh weather conditions make the Himalayas inaccessible during other months.
